Treatment

In my occupation as a vascular surgeon at the Vivantes-Kliniken Neukölln, Kreuzberg und Steglitz I treat, among other things, all types of aortic aneurysms, circulatory disorders of the legs and narrowing of the carotid artery. These diseases can be treated with a variety of treatment approaches, some are listed below.

Narrowing of the carotid artery (carotid stenosis)

Carotid stenosis is treated in close cooperation with the neurological clinic and the Institute of Radiology and Neuroradiology.

The treatment decision for drug therapy, stent implantation or surgery is made individually according to the guidelines of the professional societies. Standard surgery is the so-called "biological reconstruction" without external material under gentle local anaesthesia. In addition patients with an urgent stroke can often be helped with an apace surgery. For such, there is a close cooperation with the special stroke unit of the neurological clinic.

The complete diagnostic takes place primarily. The subsequent procedure is performed under local anaesthesia (cervical plexus-block) with a minimal incision along the skin fold to achieve minimal scarring. In general, we perform an eversional endarterectomy (excretion of arterial constriction without external material) and in some individual cases, a thrombendarteriectomy (arterial constriction with sewing in a patch using only biological material).

Circulatory disorders of the legs

Our 24-hour emergency team uses all available catheter procedures (minimally invasive vessel recanalisation, balloon dilation, catheter lysis), surgical vascular dilation at bottlenecks and all conventional bypass surgeries and techniques.

Here, the most proven and scientifically documented surgical techniques are used. For that matter venous as well as plastic bypass and composite and biological bypass grafts are used; also in a mild combination of open surgical and interventional procedures (hybrid surgery).

We have special expertise in the construction of complex bypasses (initial or bypass occlusion as a re-intervention) on the thigh (femoro-popliteal bypass), the lower leg (femoro-crural bypass) and on the foot (femoro-pedal bypass) as well as infected indications. If the body's own vein as a bypass material is not available in sufficient length, we always have biological vascular prostheses available.

Special stent grafts for aortic aneurysm, individual stent grafts with fenestration

Treatment of aortic disease with a stent graft prosthesis (minimally invasive surgery), including customised prostheses in complex aneurysms.

Surgical treatment of the aorta in the chest or in the abdomen.

Stretched aortic aneurysms (thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm) or aneurysms involving the intestinal and renal arteries can not be treated with standard stents. Instead, special stent grafts customised to the patient's anatomy are used.

Special stent grafts for aortic aneurysm (individual stent grafts with fenestrations and side arms) and special stent grafts during aortic dissection are a special focus of our clinic; in doing so, we continue to develop this technique.

Due to my many years of experience in this field, I have been working as a so-called Procter (consultant / coach) since 2016 for these interventions throughout Europe.

It is recommended to undergo examination, especially for male patients upwards of the age of 60.

Venous Diseases

Both classic surgical procedures (so-called stripping surgery) with complete removal of the diseased trunk vein and additional minimally invasive removal of the disadvantageous varicose veins as well as the so-called "catheter-assisted endovenous" surgical procedures using sclerotherapy with a heat probe are also carried out in combination with medical foam sclerotherapy.

All procedures can be complimented with medicinal foam sclerotherapy.

The majority of these operations can be performed on an outpatient basis. Decisive for the successful treatment is the ultrasound examination before the operation.

These are the most commonly performed routine procedures, nevertheless there are other conditions that may require different approaches. In case of interest and or questions I am at your disposal.
